Most of us know that pets age differently than humans, but the simple rule of seven "Dog Years" to one Human Year only tells half the story. Your pet is one-of-a-kind, and doesn't age quite the same as anyone else. With the information below, we can tell you more about your pet's age and even how it compares to your own!
Thanks for visiting InPetYears.com!
The classic "7 dog years to 1 human year" rule is a rough approximation based on average lifespans. At InPetYears.com, we take a more precise approach: we calculate a unique age multiplier for each breed by comparing its typical life expectancy to the average human life expectancy in the United States (77 years, combining male and female averages from CDC data).
The multiplier is calculated as: Human Life Expectancy ÷ Pet Breed Life Expectancy. A Chihuahua with a life expectancy of 14 years, for example, yields a multiplier of 5.5 — meaning each human year equals 5.5 Chihuahua years. A Great Dane, with a life expectancy of 8 years, yields a multiplier of 9.6.
This approach treats aging as linear across a lifespan, which is a simplification — pets do age more rapidly in early life — but it produces results that are meaningfully more personalized than the generic "rule of 7," and the same-age crossover date it generates makes for a genuinely fun and surprising result.
Life expectancy figures for each breed were drawn from a combination of the following sources:
Where ranges were reported, we used the midpoint or most commonly cited figure. Life expectancy figures represent typical healthy individuals under good care and are intended for entertainment purposes.
